FM60P & ODT3 by NYZ

Two new releases from NYZ - FM60P composed w/ Kodamo's essenceFM, and ODT3 below, composed with GForce Software's Oddity3.

https://noyzelab.bandcamp.com/album/fm60p

"Appropriately, FM60P is the sixth NYZ release to focus directly on FM synthesis, and the first six-operator variant of the FMX0P releases (which was incidentally also the first conceptual iteration of the sub-series of FM synth works, despite being released this far down the line). Given this provenance, those familiar with FM synthesis might assume Burraston would begin a six-operator exploration with the ubiquitous Yamaha DX7 - perhaps the most iconic FM synthesizer of all time - but instead, he's taken a different tack entirely, and opted to use a modern machine - the Kodamo EssenceFM, a megalith of FM processing power with a mind-numbing 300 operators available within its outwardly unassuming racked interface - albeit acting in an ascetic sense by limiting himself deliberately to only six operators. Longtime Psoma listeners will also note a referential connection with PMFM, a prior release that also utilized the EssenceFM in its construction.

On a technical level, FM60P manifests itself through the arcane pathways of Burraston's cellular automata research, which informs both the sequencing information sent into the synthesizer, and the microtuning of the voices also. Beyond this initial working ethos, the designs and numerical relationships of the operators' ratios have been arranged with the use of three different sets of Fibonacci number sequences, as well as tuning dispositions referencing Alain DaniƩlou's Harmonic Division of the Octave. Fibonacci freaks will be pleased to know that this arrangement of operators will form intricate setups of Golden Ratio based FM timbres.

For many listening and reading, these points of reference may have no meaning whatsoever, and we here at Psoma would like to offer the consolation that there is no right or wrong way to listen to or interact with any sound matter found in our catalog, or anywhere else for that matter. It could even be said that part of our initiative in publishing works such as these is defined by a desire to simply introduce more challenging and concept-driven music into the world, in order to bring new and stimulating experiences to people who are both familiar and unfamiliar with the deeper details of sound itself.

So what does that leave us with then? The sound of FM60P could be described as a chiming din of glassy tones playing in serpentine unison with sub-bass hum - but this is only a small prologue of two minutes, quickly pulling back the curtain to reveal a massive hour-long drone wall, presented in Burraston's characteristic style of rippling heavily modulated swaths of energy, underpinned by a more midrange foundation of a pulsing alien plinth. Filter sweeps reveal many more dimensions to the layers that are not initially obvious, bringing incessant bass tones and arpeggiator-like sections into focus before the wavering sea reclaims them.

Burraston's music is unlike anything else in the space it is able to inhabit, simultaneously sounding artificial and unnatural to an almost impossible degree, while also functionally conveying itself in elemental and naturalistic ways. Everything is an object, an outline, a weather system or a color, each possessing a specific set of attributes that communicate synaesthetically with the listener, as temperatures and spatial indicators, rather than confining themselves to much more arbitrary traditional sensations.

NOTE: After some confusion from listeners, we'd like to make clear the fact that all NYZ/Noyzelab catalog releases at Psoma are available ONLY as abridged digital versions for name-your-price/free download, and in their full unabridged editions as physical CD-Rs. There is not an unabridged digital version of anything from NYZ at Psoma, and the physical editions do not ship with unabridged digital versions either (that is, if you do not count the digital music present on the compact discs). For listeners only interested in unabridged digital versions, we encourage you to visit noyzelab.bandcamp.com to purchase those directly from NYZ, or even better, subscribe to his Bandcamp output and just get everything."

https://noyzelab.bandcamp.com/album/odt3

"Continuing from SEM with his exploration of GForce software instruments, Burraston builds a wall with the Oddity3, an expansive modern iteration of the ARP Odyssey that includes several new additions and functions. ODT3 consists of two such instances of the Oddity3 to accomplish the wide stereo image, both focusing on the 4035 ladder filter from the short-lived Odyssey mark II (only one of three filter types present within the softsynth). Landing somewhere on the map between the Cell Meditations and the subharmonic hums of TESCO SYNFETIX, ODT3 pulses in shallow waves that betray the depth beneath their softened surfaces. Close listening yields wondrous results, especially in headphones, as the swirling mass of the frequency spectrum slowly rises like a shipwreck called back to shore. Almost imperceptibly, the true substance of this piece is revealed in microscopic increments, until it overtakes the senses and surrounds everything, filling the air with vibrating particulate and soporific electricity, glimmering like a portal to an adjacent dimension."

Lower West Side Studio M401 Multimode Filter Resonator

video upload by Lower West Side Studio

"A few seconds of playing with our M401 Multimode Filter Resonator during calibration

For more information visit https://richsstudioproject.wpcomstagi..."
Note they are currently having a Cyber Monday sale that ends tonight.

"The ARP 2500 was made famous for sounds it created with its 1047 Voltage Controlled Filter. You can now add that rich, incredible sound to your MU modular synthesizer with the M401 Multimode Filter Resonator from Lower West Side Studio.

The M401 Multimode Filter Resonator is the Lower West Side Studio adaptation of the ARP 1047 filter. The 1047 filter is what gave the ARP 2500 its legendary sound. The M401 Multimode Filter Resonator features;

Simultaneous filter outputs including LowPass, Highpass, Bandpass and a Variable Frequency output The Bandpass output has a gentle 6 decibels/octave slope on either side of its voltage-controllable “corner” frequency, making it ideal for replicating acoustic resonators. At the other extreme, it can be set to a very high “Q” or feedback, allowing only a very narrow band of frequencies to get through.

The M401 can act as a percussion module with a dedicated input for a gate or trigger signals to “ring” its filter with adjustable decay.

The M401 also offers features not available on the original ARP VCF including adaptive AGC input that reacts to input amplitude and settings and adaptive TRIG input that guarantees a full trigger pulse at all frequency settings"

Here is an interview with Dakota Melin, the designer of the M401 Multimode Filter Resonator:

5U - FM Drone

video by Precarious333 Music

"Testing out some modules (outside the case). Patch is an ElectroSmith VCO with linear FM from Q106A sine which is sequenced by a SympleSEQ. Saw out from ElectroSmith to Barton BMC034 Switched Resistor VCF (built by Lower West Side Studio) running 2 low pass filters in series. Barton BMC034 is modulated by Encore Universal Event Generator running through the inverter on Q155 with inversion modulated by an audio frequency signal from SSL 1710 5-PULSER which is processing the same Q106A FM-ing the ElectroSmith VCO, introducing a pitch heard as the accented notes. The inverter output is then fed to the Curver section of Q155 modulated by a second Encore UEG. Simple, right? Ha-ha!

Q155 Curver is a really great module. Works great to add uniqueness to modulation signals and audio alike. I'm sure I'll find a place for it in every patch.

A minute into the video I introduce an inverted copy of the sequence controlling Q106A into the Clock input on the Barton BMC034. This is an experimental input on a very strange filter producing unexpected results. In this instance we get a sweet spot that produces truncated versions of the sequence because the filter freaks out creating dead zones. I like that kind of thing. \ (•◡•) /

Things fall into chaos when I exponentially FM the ElectroSmith VCO by another VCO running a different sequence which degenerates into the noise at the end.

Plugin Alliance Announces Enhanced Emulation of Knifonium Tube-driven Synth

Knif Audio Knifonium - Playthrough

Knif Audio Knifonium - Overview with Matthew Wang

Plugin Alliance

"SANTA CRUZ, CA, USA: Plugin Alliance, supporting all major plugin formats and uniting some of the best-known international audio companies under one virtual roof, is proud to announce availability of Knif Audio Knifonium — solidifying sister company Brainworx Audio’s new plugin partnership with Finnish pro audio equipment extraordinaire Knif Audio as an enhanced emulation of the extraordinary Knifonium, an exceptionally beautiful-sounding monophonic synthesizer that is driven by a whopping 26 vacuum tubes — as of July 7…

As an upscale synth sensation, the Knifonium features two tube-driven oscillators, a 4th order ladder filter, a ring modulator, and a gorgeous ‘steampunk’ aesthetic (worthy of American science fiction author K. W. Jeter — originator of the term — himself). Handcrafted in small batches by high-end audio device designer Jonte Knif, the original hardware unit really reflects his incomparable attention to detail. But beautiful as it is, the Knifonium is not just expensive eye-candy capable of making ‘weird noises’ but rather an exceptionally musical and inspiring instrument that offers countless possibilities for shaping and modulating sounds.

Although a new addition to the Plugin Alliance family, the notable Knif Audio name is revered by hardcore synth freaks and audiophile engineers alike. And although lead designer Jonte Knif has been making vacuum tube-based hardware for mixing, mastering, and sound design for years, his Knifonium synth sensation is carefully crafted to be second to none. No one sums it up better than Jonte himself, however, who simply says: “It sounds like nothing else.”

Engineers at Brainworx Audio have taken a great thing and made it even better. Because not only is the plugin version of the Knifonium even more accessible and easier to use than the original, it also adds features that just aren’t possible in the analog world.

With eight independent voices added to the synthesizer, Knif Audio Knifonium opens up an entirely new universe of possibilities as an enhanced emulation — for instance, imagine an atmospheric-sounding pad produced by a total of 208 vacuum tubes!

The software version also adds M/S (mid-side) and stereo Spread capabilities, a powerful Unison mode, as well as the carefully-curated FX section, including a well-known vintage-style Phaser, plugin partner brand SPL’s EQ Ranger, Wavefolder, and more as a wide range of effects that Knif Audio Knifonium users will actually want to use.

Ultimately, Knif Audio Knifonium sounds uniquely rich and captivating — even at its most basic. But best of all, Jonte Knif confirms that it sounds and behaves just like the real thing. This should come as little surprise since Brainworx Audio meticulously modeled the complete circuits of the original hardware — including all 26 tubes, and applied its patented TMT (Tolerance Modeling Technology) to recreate the natural variations in Envelope parameters, Pitch, LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) speed, and so many more characteristics to make this digital recreation sound as realistically analog and natural as possible.

Knif Audio Knifonium is available for purchase (as an AAX AudioSuite-, AAX Native-, AU-, VST2-, and VST3-supporting, fully NKS — Native Kontrol Standard — compatible virtual instrument plugin for macOS 10.9 through 10.15 and Windows 7 through 10)
at an attractive introductory price of $199.99 USD until August 10, 2020 — rising thereafter to an MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) of $299.00 USD — from here: https://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/products/knif_audio_knifonium.html"

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The filter sounds great and has multiple uses, from synthesizers to DJ mixes to a unique live performance effect. The filter also includes an envelope follower which allows the filter to synchronize with the beat or filter response of the audio you feed it, producing syncopated rhythms and other audio effects.

The Restyler also works on stereo as opposed to most external filters which only give you a mono (single) input. The auction will come with the Restyler and power cable. The unit is in perfect working condition with very little use. Cosmetically it is almost brand new but there is a small scuff on the left side. Here is some more info about the Restyler:

Sherman Filterbank 2 Rack Filter Effects

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Sherman Filterbank 2 is a classic, powerful, analog filter with a huge frequency range and killer overdrive. It is great for both live and studio use.

What you get

Independent low pass, band pass and high pass filters with resonance, frequency and ADSR (positive - negative) controls
These are switchable between parallel or serial
The second filter has a 6 octave switch, and is synchronizable with the first filter
1 ADSR generator for these filters with an external output for use with more filterbanks or modular systems, triggered by the incoming signal, by a second sounds source, or by a gate
1 FM input for the filters, internal or external audio, LFO or CV
1 VCA overdrive with AR generator also
1 ring modulator input, internal or external audio, LFO or CV
So whats new with the Sherman Filterbank 2?

There are 5 extra switches and 2 extra LEDs, and on the back panel there's one pedal input jack. A reworked front-panel lay-out and the grey metal color.

The pedal input allows foot control of freq1and bypass/effect switching. You can rewire an old wah (because they have a switch on board) as shown by te diagram in ‘extra stuff’.
A 5mm big green LED indicates "Effect on" on the FB 2
A 3-way switch on the input stage allows Hi boost as well Hi cut (both boosting high frequencies at input)
Another 3-way switch allows "Sensitrig" (which makes the triggering twice as sensitive for, e.g. clean string pad filtering) and "Limit", which leaves the filters more "breathing room" for self-oscillation if the input stage is extremely overdriven.
A 3-way switch has 2 general transpose functions : +1 Octave and + Quint which works nice with monophonic signals, and has a specific dirty character.
A 3-way switch for the really powerful and quite revolutionary "Tracking" function - a monophonic pitch follower, that tunes filter 2 to the incoming pitch, and makes filter 1 slave of filter 2 via the harmonics switch. E.g. in position 2, filter 1 will be pitched one octave higher than filter 2, but still following the pitch. This extra switch activates the "tracking" in a normal or deep "track low" position, with stunning basses as result.
The "revolutionary" aspect of this function is that never before any similar system enhances "on the spot" harmonics and creates new harmonics with fat analog circuits.
An extra white LED indicates when the tracking system is "locked on".
At last there is an 3-way function switch in the LFO section, allowing sawtooth wave shape OR AR retrig : this forces an LFO restart from the AR trig with pumping grooves as unavoidable result. If you want to receive a new brochure, please ask your dealer first.
The Sherman Filterbank is now also midi controlable via Kenton Control Freaks (a small portable hardware console, including sliders)

All the finger-tip MIDI control you need, instantly to hand. Forget your mixer maps and do it all in real-time. An ideal solution for the gigging musician, or the musician who likes to save time & settings. The Kenton Control Freaks are made in the U.K., by Kenton, and are preprogrammed with profiles for the Sherman Filterbank as well. Hundreds of additional profiles are available for download FREE from the Kenton website."

Playing filters: Sherman Filterbank VS Elektron Monomachine

YouTube via gattobus
"Just I a little experiment I wanted to share with all synth freaks like me.

It's a drum loop filtered with ELEKTRON MONOMACHINE and SHERMAN FILTERBANK 2.
I took advantage from the perfect tracking capabilities of the Elektron digital filters to "extract" a melody from the drum loop.
The signal coming from the Monomachine triggers the envelope of the filterbank, then I tuned the filters frequency to get a deep bass-like sound.
The 2 filters of the Filterbank are also hard-synced at different octaves to get a more harmonic timbre.

I hope you'll like the result..."
